Souq al-Bzouriyah

A historic Damascene market specializing in spices, medicinal herbs, and traditional apothecary goods, located south of the Umayyad Mosque, known for its distinctive aroma and traditional products.

Souq al-Bzouriyah sits just south of the Umayyad Mosque, alongside Azm Palace, and is one of the most venerable traditional markets of Damascus, specializing in spices, medicinal herbs, and traditional apothecary products. Its history traces back to the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, when Damascus was a major stop on trade routes between East and West.

The market is filled with distinctive scents blending Middle Eastern spices like cumin, cinnamon, and saffron with traditional medicinal herbs still used in folk medicine today, alongside dried fruits, nuts, and traditional Damascene sweets sold in its narrow, tightly packed shops.

The market is closely linked to the famous nearby Nawfara Cafe, near the eastern gate of the Umayyad Mosque, making the whole area a favorite stop for visitors wanting to experience the authentic atmosphere of the Old City, from traditional shopping to sitting in historic cafes.

Souq al-Bzouriyah remains today a living window into Damascus's venerable tradition of popular trade, a place that combines the sensory pleasure of scents and colors with the historical value of the site.
