Apamea Mosaic Museum (Khan al-Madiq)

An Ottoman caravanserai at the foot of Qal'at al-Madiq near Apamea, now a museum of mosaics found in the area.

At the foot of the hill of Qal'at al-Madiq, on the way to the ruins of Apamea in the Ghab plain, stands a large Ottoman caravanserai now serving as the Apamea Mosaic Museum. Built in the 16th century on the pilgrimage and trade road linking northern and southern Syria, it has a large square courtyard with arcades and rooms around it and a massive stone portal.

The museum holds a rich collection of mosaics from Apamea and nearby sites, mostly Roman and Byzantine, showing mythological and philosophical scenes, animals and geometric and floral designs, along with architectural pieces, statues and inscriptions. Above it rises the inhabited citadel of al-Madiq with views over the Ghab.
